hasselblad manuals

I found this website to be extremely helpful in my new hasselblad. On this website you can down load all the hasselblad manuals for free!

Portrait Assignment

The pictures from my studio assignment for portraits was set up around the idea. The set up included using a crane stand to hold up the lamp. The lamp was so heavy that we had to use a stand to hold it up which led me to clone it out in post. The camera was set far away from the backdrop to help blur the lights on the background. I stretched from one curtain to another in the studio. In the end I think I would have liked the pictures better with more light on the model's face. I had a soft box set up with the modeling light set very low. I also cloned and moved the "fireflies" around for balance in post.

Portrait Assignment Idea

Here is the idea for my portrait assignment. I want to use christmas lights behind black fabric with a self powered lantern. I will use strobes to produce a hair light or edge light. This time we are using digital cameras but I was thinking to shoot a couple of 4x5 transperecy.

MIXED LIGHT ASSIGNMENT / DREAMS

Today we shot the assignment for mixed lighting. We used the concepts we learned with the ambient light assignment but instead of using an electronic product we used the tungsten lights or the hot lights. My set up was to mimic the desk of a successful musician photographer. I used the strobes as fill lights so the hot lights, which was set up to look like a desk lamp, did not have harsh shadows. The final shot was f32 at 5 seconds.

SHORT STORY/ AMBIENT LIGHT ASSIGNMENT

For this assignment we had to take a short story for our environment and use a our subject a electrical device that produces its own light. I wanted to do The Christmas Story and use christmas lights but I couldn't find a suitable BB gun (it turned out that our teacher had one). So I turned to the next best thing, Poject 86. The lead singer had published a few books about his travels in the band. In one particular story he talks about a moment where he is half asleep and half awake listening to his ipod and looking out of the van window while traveling to their next concert. He notices a police car driving beside the van on the interstate and comments on how the passenger is chewing on sunflower seeds and spitting the shells out of the open window. This was the idea behind my shot. Using a soft box on one strobe I shot it half power with a f-stop of 16.9 at 4 seconds. We had to use the longer exposure to capture the ambient light. The exposure s after that went as normal (-1/2, +1/2, and +1 stop from the normal exposure whick was f16 at 4 seconds). The hardest part of this shot was arrangment. This included tilting the ipod so that the light didn't reflect into the screen and you could actually view the lit screen.

Ideas

I have been trying to find the "idea". Here are some of them: taking pictures of different facial expressions using a large format camera with transparencies, taking pictures of license plates, scanning different people's drivers license, take pictures of everyone's kitchen on my hall with medium format or digital, have a camera on an elevator and take a picture of surprised people walking thru the elevator doors. Another idea is to take a picture every 5 steps or 8 steps through my whole day (call the project 8 steps) or every 30 seconds take a picture.

FLATWARE ASSIGNMENT

We shot the flatware assignment today, Friday instead of Thursday because of a snow storm where she lives 2 hours from school. Some of the student shot on thursday anyway while the others shot today. Zubair and I came in about 1 pm to shoot ours and since he is shooting in digital he gets some experience with the 4 x 5 while helping me. I do what I can. So I wanted to do a college dorm type shot with some blue glass plates that match the fork, knife, and spoon I brought in. I borrowed a book from Valentina to use as a backdrop coupled with Zubair tablecloth that we ironed for an hour trying to get rid of the wrinkles. I shot with a 210 lens this time instead of the 150 mm lens I shot the last assignments with because i wanted to be up close to the cutlery. The best exposure I got with the polariod was #4 (f22 @ 4 sec with a stop and a 1/5 bellows extention.). Going from that Polaroid, which is 100 ISO to the 64T (which is 64 ISO transparency film) and keeping the depth of field that I wanted with f22. I decided to shoot the brackets with the time. So . . . keeping the f-stop (22): normal was at 7 seconds, 10 secwas 1/5 stop lighter, 14 sec was 1 stop lighter, and 5 sec was 1/2 stop darker. Above pictures are of the shoot setup and an idea photo I got from the internet. I developed the pictures and the last image is the one that I turned in for the assignment. I am also planning on keeping the flatware because I am tired of using plastic ones.
